Purim is coming up. People ask me all year round what would be a good credit card to designate for charity purchases. Now before Purim is the best time to take action and finally get yourself a card designated for charity. But which one?
In this post I will discuss the best credit cards to use for charity this Purim, and all year round. At the end of the post l will include a great tip on how you can donate with a credit card to your favorite charity without any fees that need to be paid, neither by you nor by the charity organization.
Before we get started
Charity is not a category for better rewards on any credit card. So the best card for charity will be the best card that earns top cashback on all purchases.
1. Citi Double Cash® Card ($0) - Unlimited 2% cashback
The card_name earns unlimited 2% cashback on all purchases. The cashback can be converted to ThankYou points and transferred to airlines if you also have the card_name.
2. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card ($95) - 2 Capital One miles
The card_name earns unlimited 2 Capital One miles on every purchase and it does not have foreign transaction fees.
Plus, now for a limited time, you earn 75,000 points after spending $4,000 within 3 months.
3. Citi Rewards+ Card ($0) - Points rounded to the nearest 10
The card_name has an interesting rewards system in which all transactions get rounded to the nearest 10 points. If you spend $1, you get 10 points, not 1 point. If you spend $5, you also get 10 points. If you spend $15, then you get 20 points, and so on.
So this card is great if you’re handing out a dollar charity to every person in shul because you earn 10 points for a dollar.
That having been said, Citi can shut down your account if you take too much advantage of this system. Therefore, it is not recommended to use the card_name for your $1 charities because you risk being shut down by Citi.
4. PayPal Cashback MasterCard ($0) - Unlimited 2% cashback
The PayPal Cashback MasterCard earns 2% cashback on all purchases. In addition, you earn 3% cashback on PayPal purchases which we elaborate on towards the end of this post.
5. TD Double Up Card ($0) - Unlimited 2% cashback
Here’s another option for earning 2% cashback on all purchases. Double your earnings with the TD Double Up Card.
You can walk into a TD branch right after you are approved for the card and ask them to print your physical credit card for you.
PayPal Giving Fund
The PayPal Giving Fund allows you to donate to any registered charity via any of your credit cards and PayPal will swallow the fees. So neither you nor the charity have to pay processing fees. This is a great way of making sure that 100% of your donation goes to the charity organization without deducting any interchange fees. Many charities are registered with them, including:
- Rofeh Cholim Cancer Society (RCCS)
- Bonei Olam
- Bayis Lepleitos
- Chai Lifeline
- HASC
- OORAH
- And many more
You can also donate to the popular Donor Advisory Funds including, OJC, Pledger, The Donors Fund, Matbia, via the PayPal Giving Fund for free using your credit card (and if you use the PayPal Cashback MasterCard you can earn 3% cashback on your PayPal transactions).
Just please note, it’s currently too late to load your funds for this year’s Purim as it can take 30-45 days for the funds to arrive to the Donor Advisory Funds via PayPal Giving.
If you give a lot of small donations, then a card that gives you bonus, like 20% extra points (Amex), after 20 transactions a month, would also be recommended. Please list which cards give extra bonuses for more transactions. Thanks.
No. Your still only at 1.2 points. Your better off with a 2% cashback card
