American Express made some significant updates today on The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card.
Here is the good, the bad, and brief explanations.
The good
New welcome offer
There is a new limited-time welcome offer. Earn 175,000 points after spending $8,000 within the first 6 months (terms apply), set to expire 06/05/2024.
New rewards structure
The card rewards was restructured.
Previously, you earned:
- 12 points on Hilton purchases,
- 6 points on a host of categories including U.S. gas stations, restaurants, flights booked directly with Airlines or Amex travel, car rentals booked directly from select car rental companies, wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service provider, and U.S. purchases for shipping,
- 3 points on all other purchases.
The new rewards are:
- 12 points on eligible Hilton purchases made directly with hotels and resorts in the Hilton portfolio
- Enhanced! 5 points on other eligible purchases on the first $100,000 you spend per calendar year, 3 points thereafter.
Hilton Honors points are worth approximately 0.5 cents per point. So with the new 5 points category, that brings you to 2.5% earnings on all purchases on up to $100k per year.
Since Hilton Honors points can only be used at Hilton properties, the rewards will only be good for someone who can utilize them at Hilton Hotels and Resorts.
Hilton hotel brands include:
- Waldorf Astoria
- LXR
- Conrad
- Canopy
- Signia Hilton
- Hilton
- Curio Collection
- DoubleTree
- Tapestry Collection
- Embassy Suites
- Tempo
- Motto
- Hilton Garden Inn
- Hampton
- Try
- Homewood Suites
- Home Suites 2
- Hilton Grand Vacations
New Hilton credit
A new Hilton credit was added. Earn up to $60 in statement credits each quarter for purchases made directly with a Hilton property. Total $240 per calendar year.
If you can make use of this credit then it might even wipe out the increased annual fee which we’ll touch upon in a moment.
New Complimentary National Car Rental(R) Emerald Club Executive(R) status.
Enroll in the National Car Rental Emerald Club Executive status through your American Express online account and enjoy perks such as Executive Area Access in the U.S. and Canada.
The bad
Annual fee increased
The annual fee increased from $95 to $195. That’s more than double!
(Existing card members will see their annual fee increase at their upcoming renewal date).
Removed Priority Pass
While previously you were able to access airport lounges with a Priority Pass membership, this benefit was unfortunately removed. The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card used to be the cheapest card with Priority Pass. Oh well.
Removed Free Night Certificate
Another benefit that was removed was the Free Night Certificate you earned after you spent $15k within a calendar year.
