Your Downgrade Options For Citi Credit Cards [2023]

- Jun 15, 2023 Credit Card Info1 comment

In the past, we’ve put together a breakdown of the downgrade options for Chase cards and Capital One cards.

This week I am going to go through the downgrade options for Citi cards.

Citibank downgrade rules you need to know about

  • Timeframe: You need to have the card open for a minimum of 12 months to be eligible for a downgrade
  • Personal to Business: You cannot downgrade a personal card to a business card or a business card to a personal card
  • Annual Fee Refund: If you downgrade or close your Citi card within 60 days after the annual fee posted to your account, you will get a full refund. If you downgrade or close your Citi card after 60 days, you will get a prorated annual fee refund (in the past the time frame was 30 days – some cardholders still report not getting a full refund past 30 days).
  • Losing Rewards: If you downgrade your Citi card that earns Citi ThankYou rewards to a Citi card that does NOT earn ThankYou rewards (for example the AAdvantage MileUp Card) then your ThankYou rewards will expire after 60 days. Make sure to only downgrade your Citi ThankYou cards to another Citi card that earns Citi ThankYou points (If you close a Citi card then you will lose the ThankYou points you accumulated on that card after 60 days even if you transfer the rewards to another card).
  • Multiple Of Same Cards: Citi allows you to have multiple of the same cards. You can even downgrade to a card that you already have.

Frequently asked questions
Can I downgrade my Citi card after I get the bonus?
You can’t downgrade the card until after 12 months. But why would you want to downgrade right away? You already paid the annual fee, you may as well enjoy the benefits for the full year
Do I get to keep my rewards if I close my Citi card?
You will lose your rewards (after 60 days) if you close a Citi card. Even if you move your rewards to another Citi card you will still lose the rewards earned on the card you closed
If I downgrade a card, do I lose the points?
Generally not. With Citi, if you downgrade your Citi card that earns Citi ThankYou rewards to a Citi card that does NOT earn ThankYou rewards then your points will expire after 60 days

  1. Hi, in order to downgrade a Citi card I would have to call customer service or there is anyway to do it online?
