- Oct 12, 2021 Credit Card Info3 comments

One of the most common questions asked to Ask Sam are “what are my downgrade options for x card”. That’s why, a while back, we started a series of posts discussing the downgrade options for each bank’s cards. You can check out our previous posts on downgrade options for Chase, Amex, Capital One, Citi, Barclays.

This time we’ll discuss the downgrade for Bank Of America cards.

Downgrade rules for Bank Of America credit cards

First thing first, let’s discuss some rules you need to know about before you downgrade a Bank Of America credit card.

  • Same family: Bank of America allows downgrades even for cross family cards. You can downgrade any Bank of America card to any Bank of America card. You can even product change Bank of America co- branded cards; (Alaska, Virgin Atlantic, etc) to Bank of America branded cards (Cash Rewards, Travel Rewards).
  • Personal to business: You can only downgrade personal cards to personal cards. Unfortunately, Bank of America business cards cannot be downgraded (most of them do not have an annual fee anyway).
  • Rewards: You will not lose any rewards if you downgrade your Bank of America credit cards.
  • Timeframe: Bank of America cards can be downgraded at any time even within the first 12 months.
  • Credit score: Your credit score will not be affected in any way when you downgrade a credit card.
  • Annual fee refund: Officially, Bank of America annual fee refunds are on account by account bases, depending on your relationship with the bank. In real life, Bank of America will usually refund you the annual fee if you downgrade or close the card within 30-45 days.
