The Best Card To Get Now For Yom Tov Shopping

- Sep 18, 2022 Credit Card Info0 comments

In my opinion, the best card to get now for your Yom Tov shopping is the Citi Premier Card. Here is why.

Huge welcome offer

The Citi Premier now boasts an all-time high offer of 80,000 points after spending $4,000 within the first 3 months. That in itself would make the card a go-to. But there’s more.

Unlimited 3 points on groceries

Yom Tov prep basically starts in the grocery. With the Citi Premier Card, you can earn unlimited 3 points on groceries.

Assuming your grocery bill, or bills, will amount to the average pre-Yom-Tov numbers, 3 points on every dollar can accumulate to a lot of points.

Unlimited 3 points on dining

Many local meat and fish stores code as dining. So with the Citi Premier Card, you will earn unlimited 3 points on those huge Yom Tov meat and fish bills as well, which may likely be your highest bills of all.

Unlimited 3 points on gas

Whether you’re driving around town to get to the grocery, butcher, and fish store, or taking your family on a Chol Hamoed outing, you’re sitting in the card and using gas.

With the Citi Premier Card, you can earn unlimited 3 points on all that gas. Just an added bonus to the insane gas prices.

You can make your own calculation of all the points you can earn with the Citi Premier Card, but let’s see how it would work. For example, if you spend $3,000 on groceries, $1,000 on meat and fish, $500 on gas, plus the 80,000 points for the welcome offer, you would get a total of 93,500 points, which is valued at approximately $935 – $1,402.

Points Earned
$3,000 Groceries 9,000
$1,000 Dining (meat & fish) 3,000
$500 Gas 1,500
Welcome bonus 80,000
Approx. total points earned 93,500 (valued at approx. $935 -$1,402)

If you spend more or less than that, the numbers will be higher or lower, so give or take depending on your expenses.

Credit bureau pull

Citi will usually pull your Experian credit report, sometimes Equifax, and sometimes Experian and Equifax.

  • Brooklyn: NY is usually Equifax
  • Upstate NY and Lakewood: NJ is usually Experian

Downgrade options

Once the first year is up and if you decide not to keep the card, the Citi Premier card has many no annual fee downgrade options. It can be downgraded to the Citi Rewards ($0), Citi Double Cash ($0), Citi AA MileUp ($0), Citi Costco ($0), Citi Custom Cash ($0), or to the Citi AT&T Access ($0).

Frequently asked questions
How can I know if a transaction will code as groceries for extra rewards?
The best way of knowing is to first do a small test transaction. There are some look up tools online but I have never found them to be accurate
