The CFPB finalized a rule that medical collections can no longer be reported on consumer credit reports. This rule is nationwide, and according to the CFPB, it will remove approximately $49 billion (with a B) of medical debt from consumers’ credit reports!
(This is besides NY and NJ having their own rules against medical debt being reported on consumer credit reports).
When does this new rule go into effect?
It will go into effect in about 60 days from now.
Is this rule for all medical collections or only new ones?
This rule affects both old and new medical debt. New ones cannot be reported, while old ones need to be removed.
Is there any time when medical debt can yes be reported?
Under the new guidelines, no medical debt can be reported on consumers’ credit reports. Regardless of how many days late it is or the amount of medical debt owed.
