Why The Chase Sapphire Preferred Is A Great Choice For A Basic Travel Card

- Apr 27, 2023 Credit Card Info0 comments

The card_name is currently running a huge offer of 80,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 within 3 months.

Here are a list of reasons why the card_name is a great pick for a great basic travel card to have.

The card_name is not a luxury travel card and does not have any fancy benefits. On the other hand, it also does not have a huge annual fee. The annual fee is just $95 and it comes along with many great basic travel benefits as described below.

1. Great suite of travel protection

With the card_name, you get great travel protections to protect you while traveling.  In the past, I (unfortunately) have used these protections again and again resulting in $1,000’s of dollars in savings. If you travel often, the card_name definitely provides a great suite of benefits. I don’t wish upon you to need to use these benefits, but it still helps for the nerves, to know you have them.  Here are the details:

Auto Rental Collision Insurance: Worldwide primary coverage on rentals. Coverage is for rentals for up to 31 days.

Lost Luggage Reimbursement: Get up to $3,000 per person for lost or damaged luggage.

Baggage Delay Insurance: If your baggage is delayed for 6+ hours, you can claim up to $100 per day to cover expenses like toiletries & clothing, for up to 5 days.

Trip Delay Reimbursement: If your flight is delayed for 12+ hours, you can claim up to $500 per trip to cover expenses like meals, lodging, toiletries, medication, and other personal use items.

Trip Cancellation Insurance: Coverage for canceled or interrupted travel due to an unforeseen medical emergency etc. Max $10,000 per person for non-refundable travel expenses including flight tickets, hotels, and more.

Travel Accident Insurance:  Get coverage if you, G-d forbid, die in an accident while traveling or lose a limb, sight, speech, or hearing (on common carriers). Receive up to $500,000 in compensation.

2. Get 25% more value to your points

Use your Ultimate Rewards to pay for travel purchases through the Chase travel portal at a rate of 1.25 cents per point! That’s a 25% higher value than the regular. For many people, this benefit alone is all they need to make it worth it for them to pay the $95 annual fee (it depends on how many Ultimate Reward points you accumulate annually).

On Chase Travel you can book almost any travel like airline tickets, hotels, car rental, activities, and more (similar to Expedia).

3. Transfer your points to airlines and hotels

With the card_name, you get the option to transfer your rewards to a comprehensive list of airline and hotel partners at a 1 to 1 ratio.

Here is the list of the current Chase partners:

Airline partners:

Transfer Ratio Transfer Time
Aer Lingus, AerClub 1:1 Instant
Air Canada, Aeroplan 1:1 Instant
British Airways, Avios 1:1 Instant
Emirates, SkyRewards 1:1 Instant
Air France/KLM, Flying Blue 1:1 Instant
Iberia, Iberia Plus 1:1 Instant
JetBlue, TrueBlue 1:1 Instant
Singapore Airlines, KrisFlyer 1:1 12-24 hours
Southwest, Rapid Rewards 1:1 Instant
United Airlines, MilagePlus 1:1 Instant
Virgin Atlantic, FlyingClub 1:1 Instant

Hotel partners:

Ratio Transfer Time
Hyatt, World Of Hyatt 1:1 Instant
IHG, Rewards Club 1:1 1 day
Marriott, Bonvoy 1:1 2 days

4. $50 hotel credit

With the Chase Sapphire Preferred, you get a $50 annual hotel credit each cardmember year. The credit will apply for any hotel stay booked through the Chase Travel Portal (once per year).

5. No foreign transaction fees

You can shop abroad like a boss with your shiny metal card while you pay no foreign transaction fees. (BTW, if this is the only benefit you need, then you can find many no-annual-fee cards offering no foreign transaction fees. Check out a full list here).

6. 10% anniversary bonus

At the end of each card anniversary year, Chase will give you another 10% anniversary bonus points when you renew your card.

The 10% will not be based on points you earn, it will be based on the amount you spend. In other words, welcome bonus points, or extra points you earn for purchases like dining do not get the 10% anniversary bonus. Only the first point you earn on purchases you make on the card will earn the 10% bonus.

 For example:

If you earned 110,000 points within a cardmember year through the following breakdown:

  • 80,000 points through a welcome bonus.
  •  5,000 points through spending $1,000 for Chase travel
  • 9,000 points through spending $3,000 on online groceries
  • 16,000 points through spending $16,000 on all other purchases.
Total amount you spent = $20,000
The total amount of points earned = 110,000
The total amount of anniversary bonus points you will earn = 2,000 points (not 11,000)

7. Earn 5 points on Chase travel

You earn 5 points for every dollar you spend on Chase travel. This is basically like a 5% discount on any travel you book.

8. $15 instacart credits

Get a $15 Instacart statement credit each quarter, plus a free Instacart+ membership for 6 months.

Conclusion

So now that Chase is running an increased bonus of 80,000 points, it makes it the perfect time to apply for this great card. It has always been one of the most popular cards on our website. So don’t miss the offer and get yours today.

Frequently asked questions
Who is this D. Barret that got every card I’m looking for before me?
Lol. You're referring to the D. Barret that is on the mock up image of many Chase credit cards. D. Barret is actually a real person. She works for Chase and was in the marketing team 15 years ago. (She sure didn’t think about how famous Chase cards would become. Doesn’t sound like a good marketer to me)
Does the Chase 5/24 rule also count cards from other banks?
Yes. Any personal card will be counted towards the 5 card limit in 24 months
For Chase Sapphire Preferred, how do we know which Cadillac models are covered for rental insurance?
You need to call the benefit administration to confirm each model individually
