How To Get A Credit Limit Increase On Your Credit Cards. Tips And Advice

- Aug 10, 2021 Credit Card Info1 comment

As you get older your expenses usually grow.  As your expenses grow you need your credit credit limits to grow as well because otherwise, your credit score can be hit terribly due to high credit utilization.

In this post we’ll discuss some info you need to know when requesting a credit limit increase from each bank. Plus, I’ll add some tips to help you succeed in getting approved for higher credit limits.

Before you request a credit limit increase

Banks will only consider increasing your credit limit if your relationship with them is perfect. If you recently had a late payment, a payment was returned, or if you often carry excessive balances, then these can all be reasons for the bank to decline your credit limit increase request. Before you request a credit limit increase make sure your credit score is good and that you haven’t had any issues with the bank that can hurt your relationship within the past six months.

Here is how to request a credit limit increase from each bank and some tips and advice to keep in mind.

American Express

Amex is king when it comes to credit limit increases! With American Express, you can request a credit increase in as little as 60 days from when you open  an account. You can get approved for up to 300% of your current credit limit. If you currently have a credit limit of $5,000 then you can ask for a limit of $15,000 and get approved for it.

Here is what you need to know before requesting a credit limit increase from Amex.

  • You can request a credit limit increase online or by calling the number on the back of your card.
  • Starting from 60 days after opening your credit card you can get approved for up to 300% of your current limit.
  • Most credit limit increase requests do not result in a hard credit pull.
  • Once you are approved for a credit limit increase you need to wait six months before you can  get approved for another credit limit increase.

Barclay

You can request a credit limit increase from Barclays at any time, even on the same day you get approved for a card. (If you request the credit limit increase the day you get approved then Barclays will not pull your credit again).

Here is what you need to know before requesting a credit limit increase from Barclays.

  • A credit limit increase will result in a hard credit pull.
  • You can request a credit limit increase at any time over the phone by calling 1-866-408-4064, or online by clicking this link after being  signed in.
  • On doctor of credit, I found a comment from the man who can which reads as follows. “If you first ask for an APR deduction, you will be transferred to the department that handles the APR deductions, and then that same department can give a credit limit increase without making a hard credit pull.”
  • You can ask the representative if there is a targeted offer on your account for a credit limit increase. These type of increases are only a soft pull.
  • Its recommended to use your card often before you request a credit limit increase from Barclays.

Bank of America

Bank of America can often give nice credit limit increases. Here is what you need to know before requesting a credit limit increase with Bank Of America.

  • A credit limit increase will result in a soft credit pull only.
  • You can request a credit limit increase by calling the number on the back of your card or in the app

Capital One

Capital One often will increase your credit limit without even asking. However, if you do not receive an automatic credit limit increase, then go ahead and request one.

  • Asking Capital One for a credit limit will not result in a  hard credit pull.
  • You can request a credit limit increase every 90 days by calling the number on the back of your card, or online by clicking this link after you sign in.

  • Capital One may want to see high credit usage before approving a credit limit increase.

Chase

My experience with Chase regarding credit limit increases was never great. They always do a hard pull, and even with pulling your credit the limit increase you get is very meager, if any.

Here is what you need to know before requesting a credit limit increase from Chase.

  • Update: Chase no longer does hard pulls for credit limit increases. a credit limit increase will only result in a soft pull.
  • A credit limit increase can be requested by calling the number on the back of your card or online.

Citi

Citi can sometimes give decent credit limit increases when you request one, sometimes even automatically as well. It is recommended to wait six months after approval before you ask Citi for a credit limit increase.

Here is what you need to know before requesting a credit limit increase from Citi.

  • There is an option, if eligible, to get a credit limit increase without a hard pull. If you are not eligible, it will result in a hard pull (you will be notified).
  • You can request a credit limit increase by calling the number on the back of your card, or online by clicking this link after your sign in.
  • If you’re not approved on the spot, cancel your request, since that may indicate that it will result in a hard pull.
  • It is recommended to wait six months before requesting a credit limit increase.

Discover

Discover will usually give a micro credit limit increase of $500 -$1,500 every time you ask (once every 90 days). It’s recommended to ask every three -six months for an increase. Like that you can slowly build up a nice credit limit with Discover.

Here is what you need to know before requesting a credit limit increase from Discover.

  • You can request a credit increase once every 90 days by calling the number on the back of your card, or online by clicking this link after you login.

Frequently asked questions
Is it true you can only ask Barclays for a credit line increase on the day you're approved?
You can ask for an increase at any time. If you ask for an increase the day you're approved then Barclays will not do another hard pull on your credit, but when asking at other times then Barclays will do a hard pull
Does Citi pull credit for a credit limit increase?
Most of the time, Citi will not pull credit when you ask for a credit limit increase
If I go over my credit limit does it affect my Fico score immediately? Or, does it only affect it once the billing cycle is closed?
Your score will only be affected when the balance reports to the credit bureaus which is usually once the billing cycle closes (except with US Bank which will be at the end of the calendar month for all cardholders)
How soon after getting approved for a card can I ask for an increase?
Every bank has different policies. Amex will want you to wait 60 days, Citi will want you to wait 6 months. Chase, Barclays, Capital One, and Wells Fargo, you can ask right after approval
Can I prepay my credit card in order for me to be able to spend more?
Credit card issuers generally don't allow you to prepay your credit card. But if you mail a check to them they won't reject it and you will get credit to spend
I'm planning to apply for a new Capital One card but I also want to increase my existing credit limit (from a Capital One card I already have). Which one should I do first?
First apply for the new card because if you first do the credit limit increase you may end up getting declined for the new card due to the recent credit limit increase
Can I move my credit limit from my business Amex card to my personal Amex card?
No. Amex allows to transfer limits from personal to business but not from business to personal
Can I transfer Capital One credit limits from one card to another?
You currently can't transfer credit limits with Capital One
Can I prepay a credit card so that I can spend more than the credit limit?
In general, banks will not accept prepayments. But if you mail a check to them, they won't reject it. So the only possible way is to send a check in the mail
Should I ask Amex for a huge credit increase and hope they give it, or rather aim for smaller so I have a bigger chance of getting approved?
If Amex does not want to approve your request they will counter offer. So asking for a bigger amount is not a problem
Does Capital One pull credit for a credit limit increase?
They do only a soft pull which doesn't affect your credit score
How can I protect my card from the bank lowering the limit?
Use it at least for a minimum amount every month
Does Capital One allow transferring limits?
It used to be possible but they stopped it at a certain point
How come Amex lets me swipe above my credit limit?
Amex very often lets you swipe way above your credit limit. Just keep in mind that whatever you swipe above your limit will be due in full by the due date (it will be part of your minimum payment)
Is there a hard pull when moving limits between Chase cards?
No. Except if your new limit will be above $35k
How can I build a higher spending power on the Amex Platinum?
The more you swipe and pay the higher your spending power will build itself
Is there any reason not to accept a credit limit increase when offered one by a bank?
I can't think of any reason not to accept besides if you're scared it will drag you into debt?
How often is it recommended to ask for a credit limit increase?
Usually it's about once every six months
Which personal credit card is currently approving the highest limits?
In my experience, it's the Venture X
