Card Overview

The Aeroplan® Credit Card will help you earn points for an Air Canada voyage, or a trip with any of the 45 airline partners. You get to enjoy some great travel benefits such as 25k Elite status, a credit for Global Entry, TSA Precheck, or Nexus, a free first-checked bag, trip cancellation/trip delay insurance, and more (details below). Plus, you can use your Aeroplan rewards to offset purchases for any airline ticket booked on any airline at a rate of 1.25 cents per point (USD)!

Why I Like This Card

I like that this card sets you up to fly Air Canada or its travel partners. You earn a nice amount of Aeroplan miles which you can use to offset the purchase of airline tickets for 1.25 cents per point! All you need to do is use your card for the travel purchases for a max of 50k miles per year. I find it amazing that you also get automatic upgrade to Aeroplan 25k Elite status for the remainder of the first calendar year plus the following calendar year. With Aeroplan 25k Elite status you get priority check-in, early boarding, and free upgrades. You can also requalify for 25k status for the remainder of the calendar year plus the following calendar year after spending $15,000 in a calendar year. And all that is besides the benefits you get, which I love, such as your first checked bag free for yourself and up to 8 companions on Air Canada flights, a statement credit for Global Entry, TSA Precheck or NEXUS every 4 years, luggage delay insurance, and loads more. Bon Voyage!

Card-Smart Tips & Advice
  • Chase 5/24 rule: Chase will decline an applicant that has opened 5 or more personal cards (other issuers included) in the past 24 months. Hence, 5/24 rule
  • Max cards: You can get approved for up to 2 Chase credit cards in 30 days. Business cards and personal cards are counted separately
  • Apply for two cards: If you apply for one Chase card and get approved, it is recommended to apply for a second card since Chase is very good about approving for two cards, even within the same day. If the first application is still pending, wait for it to be approved before you apply for a second card
  • Credit bureau: Chase Bank will usually pull your Experian credit report
  • Combining same-day credit inquiries: Some data points suggest that credit inquiries for all Personal Chase cards for same-day applications will be combined; also, credit inquiries for all Business Chase cards for same-day applications will be combined. Credit inquiries for Personal and Business card applications will not be combined.
  • Check application status: You can check your application status at Chase.com  / Customer Center / Check my app status or call 1 888 338 2586
  • Reconsideration: If you get declined then you can call 1 888 609 7805 to be reconsidered
  • Quickest way to get my card: You will be able to add your new card to your mobile wallet immediately after you get approved (it can sometimes take up to an hour for it to show up in your online login). You can also request Chase to overnight your physical card by calling Chase customer service.

How to book

You can book award flights using your Aeroplan miles with Air Canada airline and its partners here.

Pay Yourself Back

You can also Pay Yourself Back by paying for purchases on your card and offsetting the purchases with points. You can get 1.25 cents per point.

This can only be done on purchases within certain categories, and Chase constantly changes the eligible categories. Current categories until 06/30/24) are:

  • Travel
  • Annual fee (No end date)
Good redemptions

You can find the Aeroplan award chart here. This chart is a weird combination of region / distance / revenue-based formulas and works approximately like this:

Flights on Air Canada metal are priced according to its revenue-based formulas. For example a Business Class flight to Europe may cost you 180,000 miles one way (a no-starter in my book and probably yours). Now, it doesn’t mean that Air Canada always charges these ridiculous rates, but it can.

However, the redemption rates for Air Canada partners are fixed, and this is where you can find some resemblance of more-or-less reasonable values (remember that for partner airlines, it’s based on region / distance scheme. Here are some examples:

New York to:
Economy  Business
London or Frankfurt 35,000 60,000
Vienna or Tel Aviv 40,000 70,000
Johannesburg 55,000 85,000

Los Angeles to:
Economy  Business
London or Prague 40,000 70,000
Istanbul or Cairo 55,000 85,000
Johannesburg 70,000 100,000

Like I said at the beginning, none of these levels are anything to write home about, but having a published award chart always beats the [dreadful] alternative.

A 5,000-points stopover

While not entirely free as it used to be, a stopover for just 5,000 points can be a terrific deal. Especially combined with Air Canada liberal routing rules. You can add one stopover for a one-way flight, or up to two for a round trip.

However, there is some bad news along with the good.

  • You can’t have a stopover in North America.
  • You have to book it on the phone (and likely pay the C$30.00 Contact Center service fee in addition to the 5,000 points)
